Television in Germany 2021 year in review. Part 3: tops and flops.

MEDIA REPUBLIK > TV & VIDEO > THE TV REVIEW 2021 – PART 3 – TOPS AND FLOPS

German television in 2021: pandemic, federal elections, sports events.

The three themes dominated German television in 2021 and took almost all top rankings.

The most successful TV programme in terms of total audience (minimum broadcast length: 5 minutes) was the round of the Euro championship on 29 June 2021 on Das Erste, (Germany: England… yes, Germany lost 😏 ) with 27.491 million viewers aged 3 and over, equal to 76.3% market share.

The rankings are clear: it was almost all about sports and elections, but also the pandemic propelled new Tv stars and new journalistic formats.

New stars and new Ministers.

In Germany, one of those TV stars became our new Federal Minister of Health: Karl Lauterbach.

PROF. DR. KARL LAUTERBACH: MINISTER, TV AND WEB STAR

It sounds ironic, even strange that a politician is nominated Minister after a Twitter campaign supported him with the memorable hashtag #wirwollenKarl (#wewantKarl). But the man is good at communicating results and findings, and in these uncertain times, he has increased his credibility bonus from show to show. Having Karl Lauterbach as a guest was more a win for the TV show than for Lauterbach himself: the political talks “Anne Will” and “Maybrit Illner” were more successful than ever. These programs hope that the new Minister will still be using them as a health policy communication platform. And I, honestly, agree with them.

More information and quality journalism from the private channels.

The other good outcome of the 2021 television year in Germany: between pandemic and the elections, commercial broadcasters decided to re-engage with news and journalism.

Tapping into the ARD talent pool, “RTL direkt” started with Jan Hofer and Pinar Atalay, ProSieben with “Zervakis & Opdenhövel. Live”. “Joko & Klaas. 15 Minuten live” (ProSieben) went beyond their entertainment background to deliver meaningful and empathetic reportages.

More streaming from more providers and the public video libraries thrive.

ARD and ZDF took the challenge and delivered many successful mini-series (three to six episodes), making them available on their video libraries for binge-watching. The choice paid off: ARD Mediathek and ZDF Mediathek are the first destinations for the general audience online in Germany and robust competitors for Netflix & Co. in front of the younger audience groups.
