Der Spiegel revenues on the rise in 2021, digital the growth engine.

MEDIA REPUBLIK > news media > DER SPIEGEL PERFORMANCE 2021

In 2020, sales fell because of the Corona crisis. Media houses in Germany struggled with a decline in advertising, as everywhere in the world. At the Spiegel Group, the turnover decline was 11 million euros, the total turnover in 2020 was 256.4 million euros. The Spiegel Group now expects revenues to rise again in 2021, with digital being the growth engine.

2021 year end forecast.

The 2021 total revenue will be over 20 million euros higher than in 2020: so the media company announced today.

Digital has been the biggest driver of revenues: SPIEGEL+, the paid subscription that includes all online content and the digital edition of DER SPIEGEL, accounts for half of this growth, 10 million euros more than 2020.

Looking ahead.

The outlook for 2022 is optimistic as well: in the pipeline, der Spiegel has several new products, including the print version of SPIEGEL START (article in German), a portal for students and youngsters under 30, whose first issue is already out and will be available for free in most schools across Germany in 2022.

The culmination of a transformative path.

Der Spiegel comes from a profound transformation that started in 2018 with the Next Gen strategic project.

“Next Gen” encompassed both technology, design and organisation; it culminated in January 2020 with the relaunch of Spiegel digital, whose brand “Spiegel Online” disappeared to become Der Spiegel (one brand for all).

The digital Spiegel is not anymore the online face of a weekly news magazine but an always-on offer with live tickers and videos, a growing catalogue of podcasts, news and comments published seven days a week, all around the clock.

By the numbers, the digital Spiegel portal and app currently account for almost 244 million monthly visits (November 2021) and 724,6 million monthly page views (data from IVW, the certification body of German Publishers):

In Spring 2021, the print magazine relaunched, too. It paid off both in terms of circulation and subscriptions.

According to the IVW data:

  • The news magazine’s total circulation of 695,831 sold copies was 6.3 per cent higher than the result for the third quarter of 2020.
  • The subscription circulation was 418,312 copies. Compared to the same quarter in 2020, this corresponds to a growth of 10.4 per cent. 30% of subscriptions are digital (140.085 Spiegel+)

2022 will be a jubilee year of Spiegel: the news magazine appeared for the first time on 4 January 1947, 75 years ago. 2022 will deliver further growth and further innovation.
