VOD local champions: the ARD Mediathek and ZDF Mediathek.

The OTT services of the traditional German TV providers – ARD Mediathek, ZDF Mediathek, RTL+ (former TV Now) and Joyn – are enjoying growing popularity, with monthly usage now at almost 30 percent.

The survey conducted between March and May 2021 by AGF, the German broadcaster organization responsible for media audience measurement, confirms this and delivers additional evidence.

Overall, 57.2 percent of respondents (age 14-69) already used media libraries. Most of them, at least two VOD services.

The best known are by far the VOD libraries of the public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, each with over 90 percent: they have, so to say, educated the public to use VOD for over ten years.

Two-thirds of users are also familiar with the RTL Group’s TV Now (RTL+), while Joyn (Pro7Sat.1) comes in at 58 per cent.

VOD consumption is now a common habit among all generations, with the younger using more the private services, while the public broadcasters come across all age groups.

Netflix continues to lead the way among paid video-on-demand platforms. 33.9 per cent of respondents use the service, followed by Prime Video (26.8%), Disney + (7.9%) and Sky (4.6%).
